Making music is personal.
In the series The Listening Room with Clark Datchler, independent musicians gather in a studio with a veteran of the music industry to talk about their lives and creative influences— and play some tunes together.
Clark Datchler is a familiar face and voice to tens of millions of music fans worldwide whose playlists and mix tapes include songs from Johnny Hates Jazz, the group he fronts as singer, keyboardist, and chief songwriter, as well as his solo albums. Johnny Hates Jazz was catapulted to success in 1987 with the release of the single “Shattered Dreams” on Virgin Records. It became a top 5 hit worldwide, reaching number 2 in the USA and Japan, and has since been played 3.7 million times on American radio alone. “Shattered Dreams” was followed by other global hits, and their album Turn Back The Clock entered the UK charts at number 1, going triple-platinum and selling 4 million copies in the process. It is regarded as one of the definitive albums of the 1980’s.
Clark continues to write and record new albums, both with Johnny Hates Jazz and of his solo material. In addition to this, he co-wrote (with the legendary Genesis guitarist Mike Rutherford) for the Mike + The Mechanics albums Let Me Fly (2017) and Out of the Blue(2019). In early 2021, Clark started a series of popular social media live-streams called “Journey Songs,” in which he talks about the background of one of his songs each episode and then performs it acoustically. He’ll be doing something similar on The Listening Room, asking guests to talk not only about their lives and professional experiences, but also about their songs.
We will get back to you as soon as we can.
